Skincare is often thought of as a topical, external-only realm, full of products to cleanse and moisturize from the outside-in. However, one's diet can also have a significant effect on how the skin looks and feels. Here are a few food favorites to add to your diet for glowing, luminous, healthy skin.

Omega-3’s

A favorite term in the health world, we often hear about omega-3s and their importance for full body function; yet what do they actually refer to? Omega-3s are a family of three key fats: ALA, DHA, and EPA. The body does not produce these on its own; therefore, one must get them from their diet. In addition to impacting the brain and retina function, omega-3s help control oil production and hydration of the skin. Fatty fish such as salmon and sardines, almonds, walnuts, avocado, and flax seeds are all great sources of these acids, and many nuts contain nourishing Vitamin E as well.

Green Tea

In addition to being soothing to the body, green tea has a variety of properties that make it a superfood for skin health as well. It contains a polyphenolic compound called EGCG which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Antioxidants help protect the cells from free radicals and damage, reducing the effects of aging. Including green tea in one’s diet can help regulate sebum production, leading to less oily, acne-prone skin.

Red Bell Peppers

We all know that Vitamin C is key to keeping our immune system running properly. However, ingesting Vitamin C internally can also help our skin, as the powerful antioxidants help stimulate collagen production, improving elasticity. Additionally, red bell peppers contain capsanthin, which can help protect the skin from UV light. Other Vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits, broccoli, and strawberries.

Water-Rich Foods

Eating water-rich foods is an excellent way to add hydration to your diet, and your skin will definitely thank you. Fruits and vegetables with high water content such as cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and melons are all excellent ways to increase your water intake while also adding Vitamins A and C to your diet.

Foods to Avoid

Just as there are hero foods for skin health, there are also those that should be consumed in smaller quantities. Refined carbohydrates, processed or sugary foods, and alcohol are all food items that, when consumed in high quantities, can take a toll on skin health. Of course, moderation is always key. By maintaining a balanced diet that adds high-quality nutrients to your being, you are taking steps to nourish both your internal functions and external skin for an all-body glow.
